Jeff McEntire's Biography

Jeff McEntire is a native of North Carolina, who was born and raised in Boone, in the Appalachian Mountains. After graduating from ASU in Boone, Jeff moved to the Winston-Salem/Greensboro area where he lived and worked for many years before settling in Durham, where he currently lives with his wife Jen and their Blue Pit Gretchen. Jeff has always loved writing fiction, whether short-stories or novels, but it has only been since he retired from the work-world that he has been free to devote more time to writing.

For most of Jeff’s early years, he and his older brother Robert spent nearly all of their free time playing, hiking, and exploring outdoors, whether in their wooded neighborhood or in the mountains and valleys that surrounded them. In a time before computers, the internet, and cell-phones, they and their friends found excitement in real-world adventures where (provided their parents didn’t find out) nothing was off limits; old rock quarries, free climbing cliffs, exploring old abandoned buildings, building wooden rafts, and riding them down the river, and building forts and tree-houses with “borrowed” materials and camping out in them.

Getting hurt, sometimes badly, was “part of the deal”, but it added to the rush, because the risks were real. There was nothing virtual about it.

It was these early years in the western mountains, Jeff’s love of folk lore and ghost stories, and many of the other rich and varied experiences he’s had in work and life that provide the seeds of inspiration for his novels. And while his characters are not based strictly on actual people, Jeff draws frequently on real experience and places from his past to bring his stories to life.
